The Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina officially began on 06 March 2026. The Winter Paralympic Games coincide with International Women’s Day 8 March and offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate the female athletes in  Paralympic sport.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced the three outstanding winners of the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) Recognition Awards.  Lucha Villar Galvez, President of the National Paralympic Committee of Peru (Leadership), Shakhnoza Mirziyoyeva, First Deputy Chairperson of the National Paralympic Committee of Uzbekistan (Emerging Leadership), and World Para Ice Hockey (IPC Member) were each recognised for their outstanding work on 8 March 2026, International Women’s Day

The Awards, held since 2013, recognise women and members in the Paralympic Movement who inspire and emulate the Paralympic ideals and serve as positive role models. Andrew Parsons, IPC President said: “I congratulate Lucha, Shakhnoza, and World Para Ice Hockey for their outstanding contributions to advancing women’ inclusion within the Paralympic Movement.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics with a total of 160 athletes  competing in six sports show a record number of female athletes and an 18 per cent increase in participation over the previous record high of 136 women set at Beijing 2022. Six NPCs (Australia (5), Belarus (3), Croatia (2), Korea (6), Latvia (4) and Brazil (3)) have a record number of women Para athletes competing at these Games, showing the growth of female participation around the world. https://www.paralympic.org/feature/milano-cortina-2026-international-womens-day
